The nice folks at Story366 reviewed Other Resort Cities as part of their story a day project, which made my day as that little book of stories is one of the things I’m most proud of in my career, for a variety of reasons. Here’s a snippet:

Goldberg has a real knack for diving into his characters’ thoughts, guiding them through their tragedies as they face new challenges, or even just everyday life obstacles. He also paints lush backdrops, the towns these stories take place in as much a character as any of the people. I really love how all of this adds up to Goldberg finding these people at their lowest—so much of the conflict already in their pasts—but finding story in the healing—or not healing. It’s a tough trick to pull off, to place those greater conflicts, those larger incidents, off the page, but Tod Goldberg, in Other Resort Cities, does it as well as any author I’ve seen. Great collection by a talented and heartfelt writer.

This book came out ten years ago…and so reading about the stories again makes me feel a little misty, frankly…and so, as a special bonus, here’s a story that didn’t make the book, which is called “How Will The Pilgrims Survive?” and which appeared in The Rattling Wall right after the book came out…but which has never been available online. It’s the concluding story to the “Palm Springs” & “Other Resort Cities” trilogy.
