A story that we might refer to as “short and sweet” in literary fiction could translate to “brief and brutal” when we’re talking about crime and the noir genre. Many of the stories in these collections are definitely brief and brutal, but many are also funny, optimistic, and philosophical. These writers prove that page count is irrelevant when it comes to crafting memorable characters and haunting moments.
